Wolverhampton Locks (21 locks)

The flight of twenty-one locks completed James Brindley's Canal link from Birmingham to Aldersley Junction (joining the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal) which opened its full 22.5 mile (36km) by 1772. The flight alters the water level by 121 feet (37 metres) over two miles.

Factory Junction Locks (3 locks)

The locks were built in 1826 by Thomas Telford. When completed the New Main Line reduced the journey from Wolverhampton to Birmingham from 22.5 to 15 miles. The total rise for the three locks is 20 feet. The locks form part of the Factory Locks, Tipton, Conservation Area. The name ‘Factory’ referred to the nearby James Kier Alkali works.
