The Centre of England Geographed !!!

To my amazement I have passed this grid many times and wondered if I could get access to it to take a picture. After finding access and submitting the picture I did a quick history search on the internet. I then discovered it was the Centre of England and thought I would post some more information via the BBC website... hope you enjoy and hope I get extra geograph point for this special grid... "No". OK worth a try anyway.

I did a little check and all four major "Centre" grids are now complete

SP3696 Centre of England SP3696 : The Centre of England and outbuildings by Richard cattel

NN6671 Centre of Scotland NN6671 : Northbound Carriageway of the A9 by Dave Fergusson

SN7971 Centre of Wales SN7971 : Bryn Dafydd by Adrian

H8473 Centre of N Ireland H8473 : Annaghone Townland by Kenneth Allen

Please feel free to correct me on this as I'm not an A1 map reader..

Thanks to the BBC.. at the following link a larger description of this find can be found. LinkExternal link

"So where exactly is the middle of England?" If pressed, many people guess the answer is Meriden SP2382, SP2382 : Meriden by Adrian Bailey near Coventry, where an ancient monument marks the "traditional centre of England". But, to find the true answer, BBC News Online paid a visit to Charles and Margaret Farmer, an elderly couple who live in Leicestershire. SP3696 : Lindley Hall Farm by Richard cattel (bbc online website)

It has only been possible to identified the centre spot with the use of modern mapping by the Ordnance Survey. This is done by identifying the spot where a pin point would sit if a cardboard cut out of all the land (+ islands) of England were balanced on it. Hey presto, a field in Leicester.

I did a quick ask around with my family and friends over the last week and they all agreed that the centre is Meriden but I can now correct them and answer!!! A boggy field near the A5... When the BBC asked the farmers who work the land nearby what they thought of this they wondered if they could make some money out of it by selling tickets or opening a cafe... Trust me, I have been there and it won't work... Even for Japanese tourists.

Hope that clears it up.

Richard
