Thankful Villages

SX2160 : War Memorial - Herodsfoot Thankful Village by Rob Farrow SP8814 : An unusual war memorial by Chris Reynolds

With war memorials in almost every parish there are very few civil parishes which didn’t lose lives in the First World War. In England and Wales there are a number of parishes known as ‘Thankful Villages’ fortunate in not losing anyone in the Great War all those who went off to war returned home. Unfortunately this is not the case for Scotland or Northern Ireland where there are no such parishes. A few of these parishes were ‘Doubly Thankful’, losing no service personnel in World War II either.
