OS Symbols - Abbreviations on 50K key

This is one of a series of articles which give photographs of features on the ground which have standard symbols on Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 maps, with map extracts showing the symbols. On the maps a blue circle is on or near the symbol. Use the mouse to move the pointer over the blue circle on a map to hide it. Ordnance Survey lists hundreds of abbreviations; only the few in this article are in the key on maps.

CG Coastguard or Cattle Grid

Most coastguard stations are now labelled "Coastwatch" or "Look out Station", and the abbreviation CG is going to be used for cattle grids. It will only be used for new cattle grids. The first map below is a 2008 map and is the first example we have found. The second map below is the 2006 map.(The cattle grid is on the road running across half way up the photo - but is hidden.)

NF7270 : Tigh a'Ghearraidh post office. Note that there is often a telephone box by a post office, but there is a "P" symbol but no telephone symbol.
