EH

The letters EH are the first and last in Edinburgh, and this area covers the southern side of the Forth, down to parts of the Borders region. The post towns BALERNO, CURRIE and JUNIPER GREEN, in EH14, no doubt originally came under EDINBURGH.

(At local government reorganisation in 1974, the old Scottish counties, unlike many in England and Wales, were not substituted by the Post Office, so the old county names remain correct for postal purposes.)

There are also two non-geographic postcode areas for specific organisations – EH95 (Scottish Gas) and EH99 (Scottish Parliament), both post town EDINBURGH.

EN

The EN area bases itself in Enfield, Middlesex, a curious post town area in that it is entirely detached from any other in the same county – the London postcode area and Hertfordshire join to push Enfield considerably northeast of its nearest Middlesex compatriot. The EN area extends into southern Hertfordshire and also includes WALTHAM ABBEY in Essex.

NB Although the official county of Middlesex was discontinued in 1965, it was retained for postal purposes in those parts outside the London postal area. Therefore, Middlesex remains a correct county name.

EX

The EX postal area is a large one. Deriving its name from Exeter, it includes all of north, west and central Devon, and also extends to Bude in the northern tip of Cornwall. The numbering follows a fairly logical path around the area, with the exception of COLYTON – this had originally shared EX13 with AXMINSTER before being assigned EX24 in its own right in June 1998.

The appearance of some surprisingly small places as post towns such as BEAWORTHY and UMBERLEIGH is probably a reminder of the time that the railway was the main form of transport from the post, and they used to have stations.
