The bridge at Bewdley was opened in 1798 and is one of a number over the
river designed by Thomas Telford.

Bewdley is particularly prone to flooding and the Environment Agency has a demountable flood barrier to protect the riverside properties.

Stourport on Severn was an important trans-shipment point between traffic on the river and the Staffs & Worcester Canal. The canal follows the valley of the River Stour which has its confluence below the town.

The River Stour rises at St Kenelm's Well on the northern side of the Clent Hills south of Birmingham and flows along the southern edge of the Black Country. Its main tributary the Smestow Brook rises near the centre of Wolverhampton and flows along the western side of the West Midlands conurbation.
