1880s
1880
"Tower House" 53 Park Row, Nottingham
Alterations to an existing house. The south west frontage of the house remains in a Classical style. Fothergill added a distinctive tower to the Park Row side. Brand seems to attribute the entire building to T.C. Hine, but to me the features of the tower are distinctively Fothergill. It is listed and the listing description gives the date of the original house as 1827-33 and says "probably designed by PF Robinson and built by William Paterson for the fourth Duke of Newcastle. Altered c1860, by TC Hine, raised and altered c1880 by Watson Fothergill."

1881
3 South Road, The Park Nottingham
Fothergill undertook modifications and extensions to this house (dating from about 1850) between 1875 and 1881.
List Entry Number: 1255212

1882
Nottingham and Notts Bank, Thurland Street, Nottingham
After winning the commission to build this new Head Office for the Company, Fothergill went on to build a number of branches in towns across the East Midlands. This is a difficult building to photograph as it is large and Thurland Street is quite narrow. Most attempts are from Pelham Street, but from there most of the picture ends up being of the 1925 extension which continues the original round the corner. The original building is symmetrical with the large tower in the centre and terminating at each end at the gables.

1883
"Mortimer House" Castle Road, Nottingham
A terrace of six houses with ground floor shops between Hounds Gate and Castle Gate. It is notable for the complex roof line, due to the sloping nature of the site. This is possibly the Fothergill building most likely to be noticed (and perhaps photographed) by tourists visiting Nottingham as is opposite the Robin Hood statue. The Hounds Gate corner has been a pub (with various names) for some years. One of the middle shops was a Post Office in the 1970s.
List Entry Number: 1246812

1884
Coffee Tavern and Institute, High Street, Hucknall
A sadly neglected example of his work, extensively modified. Since my visit it has been acquired by The Hucknall Tourism And Regeneration Group for use as an Information Centre, and they have begun some restoration.

Row of shops 87 - 95 Derby Road, Nottingham
Not his best work!

"Clawson Lodge" 405 Mansfield Road, Nottingham
Built for Mr Doubleday, lace manufacturer. Ken Brand describes this as "probably his best house outside the Park Estate".
List Entry Number: 1254763

21 and 23 Newcastle Drive, The Park, Nottingham
I need to revisit these to be convinced that they are Fothergill designs.
27 Newcastle Drive, The Park, Nottingham
Now named Glendower it may now be offices.

1886
Nottingham and Notts. Bank, Cattle Market, Loughborough, Leicestershire
List Entry Number: 1115796

"Walton House" 39 Newcastle Drive, The Park, Nottingham
A fine house occupying a corner position at the junction with Tattershall Drive. A number of resources list this under this name; the name stone on the gateway, however calls it "The Priests House"
List Entry Number: 1254837

"Budworth Hall" High Street, Ongar, Essex
A commission probably arising from contacts in the temperance movement following the building of the Coffee Tavern in Hucknall . I have not visited this, but it does not appear to be one of his best.
List Entry Number 1124075

1887
Nottingham and Notts. Bank, Kirk Gate, Newark on Trent
After reading the description given on the grade II listing of this one(LBS Number: 385040) I was looking forward to finding it. I was not disappointed what an outpouring of confidence this building is.
List Entry Number: 1229217

...more to come409 and 411 Mansfield Road, Nottingham
List Entry Number: 1344954

1888
62,64 Castle Boulevard, Nottingham
A pair of substantial semidetached houses.
List Entry Number: 1246305

3 and 4 Huntingdon Drive, Nottingham
LBS Number: 1270776

2-8 Hope Drive, The Park, Nottingham
Brand lists this terrace, there's nothing in the design to confirm this.

5-13 Hope Drive, The Park, Nottingham
A terrace of five houses on the very edge of The Park estate.

1889
Samuel Smith's Bank, 24 Market Place, Long Eaton, Derbyshire
Very modest compared with his exuberance for the Nottingham and Notts. Bank branches.
List Entry Number: 1281305

"Milbie House" Pilcher Gate, Nottingham
A lovely building this, a warehouse build for F. A. Doubleday.
