The M6 motorway built in the late 1960s provides a noisy backdrop as the canal approaches Sneyd Junction. Extensive infilling of old mineworkings was required during the motorway construction.

The abandoned Wyrley and Essington Branch met the Curly Wyrley at Sneyd Junction. The Wyrley and Essington Branch climbed though a flight of six locks immediately north of the junction. Sneyd Reservoir now much drawn down provided a source of water but as a high section of canal this was always a problem.
