Climbing the tower of Hereford Cathedral
Last month I visit Salisbury and whilst there I climbed the tower of the cathedral, this inspired me to see if it was possible to climb the tower of one of my local cathedrals. Within a radius of 25 miles of my home there are three cathedrals, Gloucester, the tower of which a climbed a couple of years ago, Worcester and Hereford. Checking the website of Hereford Cathedral I noted that the tower is currently open on Wednesdays and Thursdays and being on leave took to opportunity to visit.
The tower is 140ft (42m) high, the height to the top of the pinnacles is 165ft (50m). There are 218 steps. The view from the top is ample reward for the ascent of these steps with views stretching way beyond the city of Hereford to the surrounding countryside and beyond the boundaries of the county of Herefordshire. To the west the view extends to the Black Mountains and the Sugar loaf on the Welsh borders. The view to the east expands to the Malvern Hills on the county boundary with neighbouring Worcestershire. The view to the south and south-east is less expansive with the hills around Fownhope limiting the extent of the view. The view to the north stretches to south Shropshire and in particular Titterstone Clee Hill is visible complete with it air traffic beacon on its summit.
