The top section of the Tardebigge flight of locks, Worcester and Birmingham Canal

By Rudi Winter

While in Birmingham for an Ex Cathedra concert at Bramall Hall in the University in the evening, we decided to use the afternoon to explore the locks at Tardebigge. We left the car on the roadside on the minor road leading past St Bartholomew's Church SO9969 : St Bartholomew's, Tardebigge by Rudi Winter and Tardebigge First School SO9969 : Tardebigge CofE First School by Rudi Winter. After passing the school and walking through the cemetery SO9969 : Tardebigge cemetery by Rudi Winter, a grassy slope SO9969 : Bench overlooking the canal, Tardebigge by Rudi Winter leads down to the Worcester & Birmingham Canal.

The canal is reached at the lock-keeper's house for Tardebigge Top Lock SO9969 : Tardebigge top lock by Rudi Winter, just west of Tardebigge New Wharf SO9969 : Tardebigge New Wharf by Rudi Winter and the canal tunnel. We followed the canal towards Worcester, had a good look at lock 57 SO9868 : Overflow channel, lock 57, Birmingham & Worcester Canal by Rudi Winter (the topmost lock of the actual flight) and saw the wreck of a canal boat SO9868 : Sunk canal boat, Birmingham & Worcester Canal by Rudi Winter.

Shortly after, Tardebigge Engine House SO9868 : Tardebigge engine house, Birmingham & Worcester Canal by Rudi Winter and then Tardebigge Reservoir SO9868 : Inflow into Tardebigge Reservoir by Rudi Winter are reached, both built to supply water to the top of the flight. Despite the generally nice weather, a bitterly cold wind kept the windchill up SO9868 : Tardebigge Reservoir by Rudi Winter, so we returned to the car and retreated to the Queen's Head pub SO9667 : Car park, The Queen's Head, Stoke Pound by Rudi Winter in Stoke Pound further down the flight.
