How do I write a word in italics for the scientific name of an organism?
I'm sorry, you can't.
We keep the formatting simple on descriptions so the text can be used in the widest possible number of places without causing problems.
You can, however, use italics in articles - see http://www.geograph.org.uk/article/Help_on_formatting_of_articlesExternal link
