NZ2560 : War Memorial, Saltwell Park

Unveiled on 12th July 1981 by Counsellor Chris Wheatley, Mayor of Newcastle. The monument consists of a sandstone wall with two flanking walls, enclosing a small paved area. There are two wooden seats displaying the badge of the Durham Light Infantry (DLI) and three plaques to the 5th Durham Rifle Volunteers. The central panel has the date AD 1886.
The left plaque has a dedication to and the badge of the DLI. "IN MEMORY OF 1419 OFFICERS AND OTHER RANKS WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN WAR FROM 1900 TO 1945. EACH A SON OF THE 9TH BATTALION THE DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY T.A. FAITHFUL".
The right plaque reads "THESE STONES WERE RECOVERED FROM THE DRILL HALL IN BURT TERRACE HOME OF THE 9TH BATTALION THE DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY T.A. DEDICATED AD JULY 1981".
The stones were taken from an arch above a window in the north gable of the drill hall. The memorial replaces one in St. Mary's Church which was destroyed by fire in 1979 http://www.twsitelines.info/Siteline.nsf/SMR/8511B9B36688503E80257638004D377B?opendocument

SP0585 : Five Ways Station, Birmingham

Pre-electrification, and taken about a year after the station was rebuilt and reopened, Five Ways station is at the southern entrance to the tunnel to Birmingham New Street station. During peak times, trains would often pull up to a signal at the entrance to the tunnel and have to wait for 5 or 10 minutes whilst the junction at west end of New Street were freed up.

On the embankment above the right-hand platform is the dismantled trackbed that took the ex-Midland Railway goods line through to Granville Street and Central station.
