Delph Locks on the Dudley No 1 Canal A flight of eight locks raises the level by about 100ft from the Stourbridge Canal. The original nine lock flight was built by Thomas Dadford(Senior) in 1779. Problems with mining subsidence and difficulty of operation led to their replacement by a new flight in 1855. The top and bottom locks were retained and a new flight constructed with one less lock on a straighter alignment. The Birmingham and Fazeley Canal The Birmingham and Fazeley canal is about fifteen miles in length, and goes from Old Turn (Deep Cutting) Junction, often called Farmer's bridge Junction, to Fazeley Junction, where it meets the Coventry Canal. It has 38 locks, including four flights: The Farmer's Bridge flight of thirteen, the Aston flight of eleven, the Minworth flight of three (rather extended) and the Curdworth flight of eleven (also somewhat stretched out). The Coventry Canal Atherstone Locks The flight of eleven locks lowering the canal onto the Leicestershire plain was built during the second phase of the canal's construction, between about 1788 and 1791 when it reached Fazeley. The flight consists of five close together in Atherstone, then three groups of two more spaced out, making the total length about two miles. The water level is changed by eighty feet, just under twenty-five metres, and initially there were sideponds constructed by each lock to assist in the conservation of water. Some of these have been filled in, whilke others are no longer operational. David Stowell's commentary on his image of Lock No 8 explains all!
