I think this gallery comes near the top on several counts: sheer beauty, and as a tribute to both the skill and to the patience of those who've contributed the photos. |

And here's another silver-washed fritillary, also looking a trifle tatty, though magnificent, too.

I just wanted to say what a fantastic find this gallery of butterflies has been.
After a truely, utterly horrendous year to stumble upon these photos has literally brought me to tears.... blubbing over my keyboard but for good reasons for a change. Yes I know, silly wet cow...but it's true - at least some faith in humanity has been restored. thank you, thank you - these photos are magnificent Tess |

![]() Can anybody itentify this one please. There was a humming-bird hawk-moth buzzing around at the time. |

Spellcheque - I don't think it is a moth (from what I remember moths have feathered antenea not stick ones like the one in your photo) Looks to me like a very faded painted lady but really not sure about that. |

nicksmith Sorry to have been so long replying. I have a short video snap of this creature taken on the same camera - a Fuji Finepix - using single frame the antennea appear to be the same as here, unfortunately the wings are moving so quickly they are just a blur. An "expert" on site at the time identified it as a humming-bird hawk-moth but as it has gone into geograph I was hoping for a second opinion. You could tell he was an expert he had an expensive looking camera, and a tripod, and a lens about half a yard long, though he didn't show me any of his photos. |
