Victorian (double slot) (wall boxes; the last of these has had its slot enlarged) (anonymous – made in 1879-87 and the cipher was forgotten; the last one has a high slot) (the 'Penfold' design and other early ones) Edward VII (double slot) (wall boxes) George V (wall box) (lamp box) Edward VIII (very few of these remain – about 150 or so – owing of course to his very short reign) George VI (wall box) (lamp box) Elizabeth II (double slot) (wall box) (lamp box) (with Scottish crown instead of the E II R insignia) (modern designs pillar box, including a shortlived square one) (modern designs of lamp box) (recent business boxes for franked mail) (interior boxes) (a design which seems to be seen exclusively on garage forectourts) ---------------- Some bxes of various reigns, incorporated into the wall of the main post office: ---------------- Those with Post Office direction signs: And a couple of curiosities, an old one at St. Bart's Hospital and a modern one outside Sheffield delivery office: Some disused boxes: And finally, an internal view: |

GordonC That's George V – presumably because he was the first G they didn't elaborate, but when George VI came along the numeral was needed. ======== A lot of postboxes have red telephone boxes as neighbours – here is a selection, including one green phone box and even one case where the postbox is attached to the phone box! |

A blue postbox Ludlow boxes with original enamel plates. Enamel plates from the reign of Elizabeth II are extremely rare and there are only around a dozen left in service. |

A double slot box, outside Post Office in Limes Walk, Oakengates, Telford. An Elizabethan box, not too far away, on the Holyhead Road at Ketley. Two Wall Boxes on the same road about 400yards apart, both are very near a local pub! One has a high gloss, perhaps someone nearby keeps it polished!! Is this box leaning or have the property owners a problem with subsidence? |

SAVED When Harby sub-post office closed in 2008, the shopkeeper wanted the box closed and it was blocked with a metal plate for several weeks, the Royal Mail offered an ugly, modern pressed steel one on a post. Negotiations with the Royal Mail and shopkeeper, generous voluntary efforts and some expenditure by the Parish Council saved this handsome George V postbox for the village. |

Here is an interesting one that incorporates the franked mail-type opening on the left, and standard opening on the right. It is outside Sheffield's central delivery office. |

This may be of interest: an apparently ordinary box which has unusual features on closer inspection. |
