Smestow Brook (Tributary of the River Stour) The Smestow Brook is one of the two main watercourses with their source in Wolverhampton. The Smestow Brook flows towards the River Severn. The Bilston Brook lies on the other side of the watershed and flows towards the River Trent. The source of the brook lies in the Springfield area, northwest of the city centre, near the old brewery and appropriately named Water Street. ![]() The first sign of the brook is when it emerges from a culvert into Fowler’s Fields. At the far end of the fields it disappears under the railway embankment and appears to flow in culvert under the Science Park and on to the Dunstall Park racecourse. The next sighting is at the Dunstall Water Bridge over the Staffs and Worcs Canal. The brook was not diverted into the canal as it powered mills further downstream. ![]() It then runs between the back gardens of terrace housing and a railway embankment towards Wightwick. ![]() At this point it flows out of the town area of Wolverhampton and into rural South Staffordshire. The locally notorious Trescott Ford off the Bridgnorth Road. ![]() Flowing through the villages of Seisdon, ![]() Trysull, ![]() ![]() Smestow and the confluence with the Wom Brook, Swindon, Greensforge and Ashwood where the Brook is upgraded to River status. ![]() At the Swindon Gauging Station the flow is 0.54m3/s which I think may be about 10 million gallons per day. The Smestow River joins the River Stour near Stourton ![]() and this meets the Rivern Severn at Stourport. |
