The Worcester & Birmingham Canal was opened in 1815 to provide a shorter and more direct link between industrial Birmingham and the River Severn. It shortened the journey by thirty miles. The existing route led via Stouport and the Staffordshire Canal to Autherley Junction appoaching Birmingham from the northwest through Wolverhampton and the Black Country. The thirty mile length includes five tunnels and fifty eight locks. The route runs from the River Severn at Diglis Basin to Worcester Bar at the entrance to Gas Street Basin in the centre of Birmingham. ![]() The thirty lock flight at Tardebigge leading up to the 580 yard Tardebigge Tunnel lifts the canal to the summit level. There are no more locks between here and Birmingham. ![]() ![]() |
