Geo-Trips :: Leamington town walk (Geograph meet)

Leamington

A walk from Star & Garter pub, Warwick Street, Sat, 4 Mar 2017 by Rudi Winter

This Geotrip is a record of a guided walk presented by Robin Stott to mark the 12th birthday of Geograph. The route begins and ends at the Star&Garter pub in Warwick Street. From here, the walk follows Warwick Street past the Dell before turning left towards the River Leam, where the effects of recent flooding were obvious. Following the river downstream past Milverton Viaduct, we reach the ornamented Princes Drive road bridge. Beyond it is a weir in the river, and the water treatment works with some interesting Archimedes screws beside it.

Returning to Princes Drive, we cross the river and the road to enter Victoria Park, a leisure area with various sports facilities. The walk then follows Avenue Road past the station and the Bath Assembly Hall. After passing All Saints Church and the Leamington Spa Mission, the route continues through Satchwell Place, a narrow passage giving access to some lodging houses built for spa visitors.

Next, the River Leam is crossed again at Mill Bridge, a footbridge leading into Jephson Gardens, a park adorned with flower beds and many facilities for spa visitors including a greenhouse known as the Glasshouse. The walk continues towards the Pump Rooms and the Parade, the main north-south axis of Leamington's town centre with its shops, cafes, hotels and underground storm water storage tanks.

While following the Parade out of the town centre, a short diversion is made to see the Real Tennis Club building in Bedford Street. We return to the Parade and follow it all the way to its end at Christchurch Gardens, then turn west around Clarendon Square, a large green surrounded by impressive buildings. From here, it is a short walk back to the Star&Garter past Clarendon Crescent.

With big thanks to Robin Stott for preparing the walk and for his insightful interpretation of the architecture and history of Leamington.
