Geo-Trips :: Half the Alltfedw circuit

Coed Alltfedw

A walk from Gelli Ddu/Black Covert NRW car park, Fri, 20 Apr 2018 by Rudi Winter

National Resources Wales provide a car park by the Afon Ystwyth near Trawsgoed with two waymarked paths. One of them leads onto Alltfedw, a low ridge to the east of Llanilar and ending fairly abruptly at Trawsgoed. It is mostly covered in forest (Coed Alltfedw).

Unfortunately, there had been significant storm damage recently, which hasn't been cleared yet. However, the lower part is accessible with care, while I had to turn round near the summit because the toppled trees were piled up or leaning precariously against each other.

From the NRW car park, the path leads back to the road junction by Trawsgoed Bridge across the Ystwyth, then slightly uphill away from the river and under the railway viaduct of the abandoned Aberystwyth-Carmarthen line. After following the forestry track to its first bend, the path carries on high above the Nant Freuo. Currently, a few fallen trees need to be negotiated here. After a short while, a waterfall is reached. It is fed by the overflow channel of a small reservoir, which also has an outlet sluice in the middle with a decrepit pier leading to it. Shortly after passing the reservoir, the path rejoins the forestry track.

At the next opportunity for a right turn, the route doglegs twice up onto the Alltfedw ridge, with good views into the Ystwyth valley below. Near the top, there is a four-way bridleway junction, with some pasture surrounded by some beautiful old trees. The route turns right back into the commercial forestry, and this is the point where I had to turn round because of the storm damage.

On the map below, the grey line is the GPS track from this trip. Click the blue circles to see a photograph taken from that spot and read further information about the location. The blue lines indicate the direction of view. There is also a slideshow of this trip. ( )
