Geo-Trips :: From Buckingham Palace to St Paul's Cathedral

Central London

A boat trip from Green Park tube station, Mon, 12 Feb 2018 by Rudi Winter

This sightseeing geotrip combines a walk through parts of Westminster followed by a boat trip down the Thames and finishing with a climb up to the viewing gallery on the outside of the dome of St Paul's Cathedral.

Starting from Green Park tube station, we walked towards Buckingham Palace and mingled among the other tourists on the Victoria Monument outside the palace to watch the Changing of the Guard ceremony. Once the sound of the pipes had subsided, we had a walk along the lake in St James's Park, which was sporting some surprisingly colourful flower displays given the time of year as well as resident herons, pelicans and assorted waterfowl. On to Horse Guards, where we were able to observe doors being closed ceremonially behind mounted sentries. Turning right onto Whitehall, we passed Downing Street, the Cenotaph and Richmond House, which is expected to become the temporary home of the House of Commons while the Palace of Westminster is being refurbished over the next few years. After a circuit of Parliament Square to see Westminster Abbey, the Sanctuary and the Palace of Westminster, we admired the view of the most Geographed object, the London Eye, and I felt compelled to add my contribution to the tally of 1336 photos of it on this site (at the time of writing this). A quick loop across Westminster Bridge and around County Hall gave us a direct view of the Eye from below.

After returning across the bridge, we took one of Transport for London's scheduled river services to take us to Bankside Pier, and I was lucky enough to sit by an open window, giving me an opportunity to take pictures of the monumental buildings along Victoria Embankment on the north bank of the river, as well as of the various bridges in this section of the Thames.

From the pier, it's just a short walk past the Globe Theatre and across Millennium Bridge to St Paul's Cathedral. With light beginning to fade, I was lucky to just get a few views across the roofs of the City from the cathedral dome. After returning to ground level, we had the opportunity to hear Llandaf Cathedral Choir from Cardiff perform Evensong. We finished the trip in a pizza place across the road before returning to the tube at St Paul's station.

On the map below, the grey line is the GPS track from this trip. Click the blue circles to see a photograph taken from that spot and read further information about the location. The blue lines indicate the direction of view. There is also a slideshow of this trip. ( )
