Geo-Trips :: Boardwalk circuit in Cors Caron

Cors Caron

A walk from Maes-llyn layby on the B4343 south of Pontrhydfendigaid, Sun, 25 Feb 2018 by Rudi Winter

A short lunch-time walk to stretch the legs on a crisp winter day. Totally flat, the walk begins at a layby near Maes-llyn farm on the road from Pontrhydfendigaid to Tregaron, where there is a gate leading onto the former railway trackbed (now cycle path) through the raised bog of Cors Caron. After heading south for a kilometre or so, the continuation of the track is gated off (with the cycle path returning to the road) and the boardwalk circuit branches off to the right and into the bog proper. There are a few ponds in it, which are remnants of peat digging in the past - the trenches are quite obvious on satellite images of the area. At the time of my visit, the boardwalk was in the process of being repaired, with many segments piled up on the railway track. Most of the circuit had already been done, but there was a short section in the middle, before reaching the branch to the bird hide, which was closed at the time. From here, the circuit continues on planks between more peat digging pools back to the cycle path. The return leg follows the railway alignment past the lake at Maes-llyn and back to the lay-by.

On the map below, the grey line is the GPS track from this trip. Click the blue circles to see a photograph taken from that spot and read further information about the location. The blue lines indicate the direction of view. There is also a slideshow of this trip. ( )
