Geo-Trips :: Wye Valley Walk (2) - Pont Rhydgaled to Pont Marteg

Wye Valley Walk

A walk from Pont Rhydgaled, Sat, 17 Sep 2011 by David Purchase

Between 2011 and 2015 a group of four walkers completed the Wye Valley Walk, from the source on Plynlimon (Pumlumon) to the sea at Chepstow. The first part of the walk was done in sets of (typically) three-day trips, but as we got near the end they became day trips from Bristol.

It was perhaps unsurprising that the initial stages, near the source, were in the mountains. More of a surprise was that the final legs were high above the river - we christened it 'The Wye Hilly Walk'.

My Geograph objective was to get a continuous chain of photos, with no diagonals, from source to sea. I believe that I achieved this, but if you disagree please let me know.

Leg 2 was 23 km long, with 500 m of ascent. Both these figures were the largest of any leg on the trip - thank goodness we were a bit younger then! It stayed close to the river as far as Llangurig, and then disappeared into the hills before descending to the A470 at Pont Marteg.

Click the blue circles to see a photograph taken from that spot and read further information about the location. The blue lines indicate the direction of view. There is also a slideshow of this trip. ( )
