Tadebigge flight of locks, Worcester & Birmingham Canal

A walk from roadside near St Bartholomew's, Tardebigge, Sat, 9 Feb 2019 by Rudi Winter

While in Birmingham for an Ex Cathedra concert at Bramall Hall in the University in the evening, we decided to use the afternoon to explore the locks at Tardebigge. We left the car on the roadside on the minor road leading past St Bartholomew's Church and Tardebigge First School. After passing the school and walking through the cemetery, a grassy slope leads down to the Worcester & Birmingham Canal, which is reached at the lock-keeper's house for Tardebigge Top Lock, just west of Tardebigge New Wharf and the canal tunnel. We followed the canal towards Worcester, had a good look at lock 57 (the topmost lock of the actual flight) and saw the wreck of a canal boat. Shortly after, Tardebigge Engine House and then Tardebigge Reservoir are reached, both built to supply water to the top of the flight. Despite the generally nice weather, a bitterly cold wind kept the windchill up, so we returned to the car and retreated to the Queen's Head pub in Stoke Pound further down the flight.
