Geo-Trips :: City squares in Glasgow: Hillhead, Kelvingrove, Anderston, Blythswood, Gorbals

Anderston

A walk from Òran Mòr, Byres Road, Glasgow, Wed, 26 Jun 2019 by Rudi Winter

preceding legThis trip is part of a series.

This is my walk back to the hotel after meeting other Geograph-ers at the Òran Mòr, a church-turned-foodie pub in the Hillhead area in northwest Glasgow. As my hotel was in the Gorbals, that gave me an opportunity to collect a few squares while walking back on the evening of the latest sunset of the year.

I started by walking down Byres Road to the remnants of the former Western Infirmary, where the erstwhile Tennant Memorial Institute of Ophthalmology awaits redevelopment. Turning towards Kelvingrove with its museum, I followed the path along the southern edge of Kelvingrove Park, then along Clairmont Gardens and Elderslie Street. Here I discovered both the Hindu and Sikh temples of Glasgow and, later, a pyramid-shaped church which had been converted into an independent community centre.

Here I returned to Argyle Street, which runs all the way from Kelvingrove in the west to Trongate in the Merchant City in the east. However, it is brutally cut in half by the M8, and I followed its former alignment underneath the tangle of motorway bridges and ramps. To my surprise, Anderston Station is in the middle of the messy motorway junction 19.

I soon reached the River Clyde, with a look along the Caledonian Railway Bridge leaving Glasgow Central station, then took the suspension footbridge and followed the southern riverbank back to my hotel.
