Around the Berwyns once more

A cycle ride from Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog , Thu, 4 Jul 2019 by Richard Law

A slightly cheeky bike ride around the northeastern part of the main Berwyns ridge, collecting a dozen or so Personal Points which I'd missed in various previous visits to the area. Recollection suggested that some parts of this route were on short grass and easy ridge-top paths, so I thought I'd see if it 'went' as a bike ride. It's not completely legitimate, it must be said, as some of the paths aren't bridleways. The reality turned out to be partly right and partly quite wrong, as there was a fair amount of carrying uphill and pushing through deep vegetation involved, as well as some excellent high-level riding in places. It was also an opportunity to look for some of the historic county boundary and estate marker stones that were mapped in the 1890s along the ridge of Rhos to Mynydd Mawr to Foel Wen to Tomle, but sadly a lot of those simply don't seem to be there any more. Either they're now buried in deep heather, or they've been removed for fence-anchoring duties, which is a shame.

The whole trip is just over 16 miles long, with about 3400ft of ascent and descent in it.

Click the blue circles to see a photograph taken from that spot and read further information about the location. The blue lines indicate the direction of view. There is also a slideshow of this trip. ( )
