Geo-Trips :: An unusual journey home

London

A walk from Liverpool Street railway station, Fri, 13 Mar 2020 by Thomas Nugent

I have worked full time in the Czech Republic for almost 14 years, commuting home for long weekends twice a month during that time.

As the Coronavirus (Covid-19) took hold in Europe, I changed my travel plans from Prague to Glasgow from saturday 14th March to Friday 13th March. This was to take advantage of a direct flight, avoiding the potential virus hot-spot at Heathrow's often overcrowded Flight Connections centre where travellers from around the globe converge in a small space for long periods of time.

However, as the Czech Government declared a state of emergency on Thursday 12th, with plans to close the airports and borders the next day, I immediately downed tools and headed to Prague airport (accompanied by my 21 year old son), booking the first flight to the UK (which happened to be to Stansted with easyjet) from the train on the way to Prague airport.

The first sign that all was not normal was when only 4 or 5 passengers disembarked the incoming flight from Stansted - a flight that would normally be full.

As soon as I landed in Stansted I began to look at options for getting home to the Glasgow area. The best in the circumstances was the 05:31 train from Euston to Glasgow Central. This entailed a 4 hour stopover in central London in the wee small hours, which would have been an issue for most folk - but not for the intrepid geographer.

This Geo-trip shows much of my walk around the fairly quiet streets of that great city in the wee small hours of Friday 13th March.
