Geo-Trips :: Pennine Way north - aborted

Cheviots

A walk from Uswayford, Wed, 25 Mar 2009 by Oliver Dixon

After the previous hard day walking the first half of the Cheviot stage of the Pennine Way, I woke at Uswayford to a bright sunny day, but with a strong, bitterly cold northerly wind. A quick appraisal of the weather made me realise that my scheduled walk through to Kirk Yetholm would be very hard going, so I took the soft option of aborting my mission and heading southwards through Kidland Forest back to Alwinton - the highest village in Coquetdale. With the wind behind me, it turned out to be a very pleasant walk, and I was not too disappointed as it completed a sweeping arc through some fine Cheviot countryside and connected up at the southern end with the old drovers road of Clennel Street which I had walked a couple of times in the past.

I had ordered a taxi from Harbottle to pick me up in Alwinton, but as I arrived an hour early, I wanted to ring and see if he could pick me up sooner. A salutary experience! No mobile phone signal and the phone box - like most nowadays - did not accept coins. It took me a while to figure out how to use my debit card, but the most disconcerting aspect was finding when I received my bank statement that a one minute call to the next village had cost me £1.40!

I had enjoyed a good two days walk, but it left me with some unfinished business which I did not complete until the following summer.
