Geo-Trips :: Pennine Way north - concluded

Cheviots

A walk from Barrowburn, Thu, 2 Sep 2010 by Oliver Dixon

After my abandoned attempt to walk the last stage of the Pennine Way from Byrness to Kirk Yetholm in March 2009, it was nearly 18 months before the right combination of availability and weather presented itself to complete the walk. An early morning train ride from Hexham to Newcastle and a bus journey (which I nearly missed because the bus pulled into the wrong bay at Newcastle bus station) saw me arriving at Rothbury, where a taxi was waiting for the long drive to Alwinton and high up Coquetdale to my starting point near Barrowburn. It was a beautiful late summer's day, but the walk ahead of me was a daunting prospect as I didn't start walking until 10.45, and had 25 km of rough country ahead of me. I climbed up to the summit of Windy Gyle where I picked up the Pennine Way where I had left off the previous year. I met a number of other walkers including several large parties along the way. The scenery was breathtaking - especially round the head of the College valley. I made slow progress, not being so fast over the ground as I once was, and by the time I reached the summit of Schil it was obvious I was not going to make Kirk Yetholm by my ETA of 6 pm. A quick phone call to my landlady for the night assured her I was still on my way (she had urge me to call if I was going to be late as she "would worry about me otherwise"). I abandoned the idea of the final high-level alternative over White Law (I don't think it was ever really on my schedule!) and headed down the valley of the Halter Burn to arrive in Kirk Yetholm a little after 7, at the end of over eight hours walking on what was surely one of the most memorable walks of my life. A good meal at the Border Inn and a well-earned night's rest followed at the end of a perfect day.
