Tintagel to Port Isaac

Week 2- Day 5 – Wednesday 30 September 2009

Distance 9.2 miles, Ascent 2,740ft

The start of today’s walk provides views to the ruins of Tintagel Castle; soon afterwards I reached Tintagel church which is situated high up above the cliffs and isolated to the west of the village. A quick visit to the church and then it is back to the coast path. A few hundred metres on and I passed the youth hostel. Much of the walk involved more high cliffs with a number of steep descents and ascents. The association’s guide book describes these valleys as ‘precipitously steep’ and grades the day as ‘severe’. The guide also describes today’s section of the coast path as ‘remote, lonely and often tough, and will be especially appreciated by those who relish an empty, arduous and dramatic coastline.’ After a couple of miles I descended to Trebarwith Strand and relaxed a short while enjoying the beach before continuing along the coast path towards Port Isaac. Eventually the coast brought me to Port Gaverne and then just round the next headland, Port Isaac. Overlooking The Haven, which provides a sheltered harbour and beach, Port Isaac is very familiar thanks to the TV series ‘Doc Martin’. The B&B I stayed in was high on the west side of The Haven and offered good views over the village.
