Port Isaac to Padstow

Week 2- Day 6 – Thursday 1 October 2009

Distance 11.7 miles, Ascent 2,840ft

The first part of today’s walk is described in the SWCP association’s guide book as ‘strenuous’. The guide also described this part of the walk as: ‘From Port Isaac to Port Quin is a rollercoaster of a path, closely following the ups and down and ins and outs of the quiet, scenic but energy sapping coast.’ Beyond Port Quin the coast path passes the beautiful Port Quin Bay with its sandy beaches, the walking now was gentler and less strenuous. Much of today’s walk was in a westerly direction; rounding the headland and reaching Pentire Point I was heading south again. With the coast facing the Atlantic, I passed surfing beaches such as Hayle Bay near Polzeath. Continuing south I entered the Camel estuary with today’s destination, Padstow, coming into view across the river. At Rock I caught the ferry across the River Camel to Padstow and found a B&B for the night. This was the first time I had been in this seaside town, with has very strong associations with TV chef, Rick Stein. I was surprised at how many businesses he is involved with in this town. Evening meal for me was in one of the harbour pubs, like many pubs in this part of the world it had a nautical theme. One of the attractions of this walk eating in different pubs each evening is savouring local ales
