Geo-Trips :: Exploring the glens around Cannich

Glens Cannich and Strathfarrar

A drive from Cannich, Wed, 1 Oct 2014 by Nigel Brown

Heading for the north west of Scotland, a ferocious weather forecast made me pause for thought. Never mind, I'd an alternative in store, waiting for the right moment. The great glens centred on Cannich, west of Inverness and north of Loch Ness are at their best in autumn, and now seemed to be that moment. I booked in for a couple of nights at the campsite in Cannich.

Temperatures had plummeted overnight and there were high winds with light drizzle early on, an echo of what was happening in the north west, but there were also signs of improvement. I headed for my main objective, Glen Strathfarrar. However, I'd got the days wrong, and found the locked gate at the start of the private road up the glen didn't open until 13.30. So I turned back for Glen Cannich.

I was soon snapping away, and before long the drizzle had vanished. By the time I reached the Mullardoch dam the sun was out and the autumn scenery glorious. This was a familiar spot from hill-walking days. Then it was off to Strathfarrar, an even better glen. I missed out most of the early squares in woodland as time was getting on, and concentrated on exploring the head of the glen, with great views out over Loch Monar amongst others. Evening was drawing in by the time I was back at camp.

Click the blue circles to see a photograph taken from that spot and read further information about the location. The blue lines indicate the direction of view. There is also a slideshow of this trip. ( )
