Padstow to Mawgan Porth

Week 2 – Day 7 – Friday 2 October 2009

Distance 18 miles, Ascent 2,260ft (approx)

This is the last full day of week two; my aim is tomorrow reach Newquay by lunchtime in order to catch a train home. To achieve this today objective is to reach Mawgan Porth, this will leave a shorter distance to walk tomorrow morning.

Leaving Padstow the coast path followed the west side of the Camel estuary passing the war memorial above St Saviour’s Point and eventually reaching the coast again at Steeper Point and its daymarker, a stone tower. As I was walking the coast path beside the Camel estuary I noticed a sandbank named The Doom Bar, I assume this is the inspiration for the name of the Sharps beer. Much of today’s walk is described by the SWCP association’s guide book as ‘easy’ and having reached Steppers Point I turned westward following the coast path to Trevone and then past the sandy Harlyn Bay. Passing Cataclews Point I approached Trevose Head with its lighthouse. Rounding the headland the coastpath now heads south as it follows the west-facing coastline, passing Booby’s Bay and Constantine’s Bay as well at Treyarnon youth hostel. Between Treyarnon and the next destination, Porthcothan the coastal cliffs are serrated by a number of coves such as Pepper Cove and Warren Cove. Reaching Porthcothan it was decision time, it was now approaching five in the afternoon, my objective for the day, Mawgan Porth was still a couple of hours away, but before continuing I ensured I had some accommodation. I didn’t want to walk for another two hours only to find no accommodation for the night. A couple phone calls and with accommodation booked I continued reaching Mawgan Porth at about seven. My guest house for the night was high up overlooking the seaside restore and after a long day’s walk I didn’t really want to venture out again so I ate in. Whilst eating I enjoyed the view in the fading light with the coast stretching to the west with the lights of a distant St Ives visible. That popular seaside town was about another three days away on the coast path which would await me next spring.

Click the blue circles to see a photograph taken from that spot and read further information about the location. The blue lines indicate the direction of view. There is also a slideshow of this trip. ( )
