Installing Base Section of Tower No 24
When the towers are built the transformer and other electrical equipment is
installed onto the concrete base before the bottom section of the tower is lifted into position.
Here at Turbine No 24 in May 2008 this picture was taken moments before the transformer was encased within the bottom 12 metre tall tower section.
The transformer is needed because the electricity produced by the turbine is alternating current, AC with a variable frequency which cannot be handled by the national grid therefore the transformer converts it into direct current, DC. then back to a constant AC frequency for transmission to the national grid for consumer use.
You can see the two circular rows of securing nuts and bolts are all in place ready to secure the tower section to the ground.
