Bird's eye view of Union Canal between Broxburn and Niddry
The Union Canal curves away from the foot of the Albyn bing of the Broxburn shale oil works, from the top of which the photo is taken, and then passes the Niddry bing of the Oakbank Oil company's works at Winchburgh. The Albyn bing in the foreground shows the typical "fingering" along its further edge formed by slewing the tipping barrow or tub rubs sideways every so often from a central distribution point.
