These large concrete blocks were made in 1940 in anticipation of an invasion by Nazi Germany. The blocks stretch in a long line, above the high water mark, all the way from the River Ythan to the River Don some 12 miles to the south. They served to make life difficult for tanks trying to land on the beach. Behind them there were extensive barbed wire entanglements and areas of iron structures made from scaffolding poles.
