On 12 December, 1901 Marconi proved that radio waves could bend round the planet by transmitting the letter "S" from his Poldhu Station, near this monument, to his temporary radio receiver and antenna in Newfoundland. In 1923 and 1924, pioneering shortwave experiments were conducted from Poldhu Station.
