St Mawes Castle
St Mawes Castle
This fortification was built between 1539 and 1545 and along with Pendennis Castle was intended to protect the entrance to Falmouth Harbour and Carrick Roads with cannons. In the English Civil War it was occupied as a Royalist stronghold. Unfortunately for them it was not designed to be defended from the landward side and the Royalists surrendered once they were confronted by Roundhead troops.
