St Budeaux Church
St Budeaux Church
The church is a mile to the northeast of the area of Plymouth known as St Budeaux and is situated on a ridge overlooking a steep valley to the north. The church was built in 1563 replacing a pre Norman chapel. In 1569 it was the scene of the marriage of Sir Francis Drake to Mary Newman. Its commanding position over the Ernesettle valley led to it being the site of two battles in the English Civil War causing extensive damage to the church.
