Early snow, Sowcroft Lane
For the first time in decades, snow settled in October in this part of the Hampshire Downs. Not particularly clear in this shot, but many trees still carried most or all of their leaves.
In fact, snow in October in this part of the world is extremely rare. Sleet or wet snow falls in the South-East on average about once every ten years, but the last time it settled was apparently in 1926. And the last time there was as much on the ground was in 1880. [Information provided by meteorologist Philip Eden.]
