In 2008, winter came early: the ash at the top of the picture has hardly started to turn; the beech in the centre still has many leaves, though they are showing an autumnal palette.

Snow in October in this part of the world is extremely rare. Sleet or wet snow falls in the South-East on average about once every ten years, but the last time it settled was in 1926. And the last time there was as much on the ground was in 1880. [Information provided by meteorologist Philip Eden.]
