Robert Tannahill's grave
The poet Robert Tannahill died in 1810. The site of his grave, in the kirkyard of the West Relief Church (now Castlehead Church), went unmarked until a memorial was erected there by public subscription in 1867.
Castlehead Church and churchyard
The church, on Canal Street, was built as the West Relief Church. It opened in 1782, and its first minister, Patrick Hutchison, was inducted on the 22nd May 1783. The date 1781 appears on the building's eastern wall. It later became Canal Street United Presbyterian Church, and then Castlehead Church. The poet Robert Tannahill is buried in the churchyard. For further information, see Link(at HappyHaggis), which has useful transcriptions of the memorials in the churchyard.
