Barrow Bridge, near Bolton
Picturesque stone houses reached by little footbridges spanning a brook. Barrow Bridge was once a thriving community in itself, built around one of Bolton's earliest cotton enterprises known as Dean Mills. Various problems forced the Dean Mills Co. into bankruptcy in 1895 and by 1913 almost all the mills had been demolished. The area became a popular day trip destination in Edwardian times and some of these houses provided teas for visitors. There was also a boating lake (now filled in and serving as a car park).
