Canmlwyddiant Ysgol Chwilog School Centenary
The school was opened on 14 November 1908 by the Right Honourable David Lloyd George, at that time Chancellor of the Exchequer. It was one of a number of local Council Schools built at the same time, following the Education Act of 1902. Until its opening the children of the expanding village of Chwilog and the surrounding farms had to walk considerable distances, most to the church school at Llanarmon, others to Llangybi or Llanystumdwy.
The school was built by Griffiths Jones of Morfa Nefyn at a cost of about £1900. However “local boy” Lloyd George secured a contribution from the Treasury of £1000 and the school only cost the County Council £900.
On the day of opening the children and adults of the village processed along the village street to the school behind a large Welsh flag carried by the oldest pupils, and everyone else waving small Welsh flags.
In declaring the school open Lloyd George closed his comments thus:
“The costliest thing for a nation is the poorest education, and the cheapest thing is the best education. The best weapon is education. The smallest school in the country can leave its mark.”
Exactly one hundred years later the children of the school and the villagers of Chwilog staged a recreation of the events of 1908. Led by the present headteacher on horseback the procession walked to the school where the opening ceremony was performed by local people playing the parts of Lloyd George and Mrs Lloyd George. The original address was repeated.
