Swans on the Moon

Most residues from the kilns that extracted oil from West Lothian shale were piled high in the well-known red bings but in one area of Broxburn, between Greendykes Road and the Union Canal, the waste appears to have been scattered higgledy-piggledy to create a moonscape on Earth. However, its very isolated nature, unappealing to humans, makes a pool of water that has collected in its midst attractive to a pair of swans. Believe it or not, planning applications have been submitted, though not yet passed, for housing developments in this vicinity.
