The Royal Citadel, Plymouth – part of the south wall
One of Europes finest 17th century fortifications, the Royal Citadel was built (1665-71) by King Charles II on Plymouth Hoe to protect the vital naval base and, it is said, also to keep an eye on the citizens of the town who had rebelled against the king in the recent Civil War. Its 70 foot high walls, on which its old guns could dominate the whole of Plymouth Sound and the Cattewater, are now a ‘national monument’. LinkExternal link
The Citadel has been a Royal Artillery base throughout the 20th century and for the last fifty years has been the barracks of 29th Commando Regiment RA, part of 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines, who specialise in amphibious warfare. In recent years the regiment took part in the following “peacetime” operations: Brunei Revolt 1962, Borneo - Indonesian Confrontation 1963-66, Northern Ireland terrorism 1969-99, Cyprus UN – Turkish Invasion 1974, Falklands Conflict 1982, Balkans UNHCR 1992-99, Iraq & Afghanistan 2003-08.
