One of Europes finest 17th century fortifications, the Royal Citadel was built (1665-71) by King Charles II on Plymouth Hoe to protect the vital naval base and, it is said, also to keep an eye on the citizens of the town who had rebelled against the king in the recent Civil War. Its 70 foot high walls, on which its old guns could dominate the whole of Plymouth Sound and the Cattewater, are now a ‘national monument’.
