The station, designed by John Dobson - see NZ2463 : Plaque re the design and building of Newcastle Central station - was opened, according to the date above the three bas reliefs - see NZ2463 : Bas relief of Queen Victoria, Newcastle Central station main exit and NZ2463 : Bas relief of Prince Albert, Newcastle Central station main exit - on 28th September 1849. Originally there were "medallions" of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert; this one of Edward was added in 1906 when he opened the NZ2463 : King Edward Bridge - see LinkExternal link .
