Holwood was what Pevsner calls "the suburban estate (at that time suburban in the Roman sense)of the younger William Pitt". The estate was set in rolling countryside on the dip side of the North Downs. Although it is within the boundaries of Greater London, the countryside hereabouts is largely unspoilt.
