Defensive Pits, "Lilia" on Antonine's Wall
This honeycomb series of defensive pits, known as Lilia, is adjacent to the north gate at Rough Castle on Antonine's Wall. Camouflaged with grass, leaves and twigs hiding sharpened stakes set in the pits must have proved a formidable obstacle for attackers. This section of the Wall at Rough Castle and the defensive ramparts of the castle are well preserved and well worth visiting.
