The Covenanters Monument
The Covenanters Monument
Located in the community garden on the edge of Muirkirk. The monument commemorates local Covenanting men who died for their religious beliefs. At the battle of Ayrsmoss, on 20 July 1680, Richard Cameron and eight of his men were killed. The others were taken to Edinburgh for public execution. In February 1865, John Smith was shot dead and John Brown died similarly on 1 May of the same year. 18 year old William Adam was captured and shot by dragoons in March 1865. The lonely place where he died is shown in NS6725.
