The Asahi liner train (1 of 11)
The Asahi factory opened in Killala, near Ballina, in 1974 and closed in 1997. It used coal and oil brought by rail from Foynes (on the Shannon). This is a series of photographs showing the empty train between Ballina and Gort on its return working to Foynes. Many of the level crossings had no crossing keeper. The train’s guard opened and closed the gates. This increased the journey time considerably allowing the train to be chased without excessive speed and within normal road safety standards. The train is awaiting departure from Ballina. Continue to G2317 : The Asahi liner train (2 of 11).
